The William The Fourth, in Kenwyn Street, is reputedly built on the site of a Dominican Friary and visited by the shade of a grey-robed friar. One afternoon, before I heard about the phantom cleric, I kept an appointment at the Inland Revenue and arranged to meet a friend in this public house afterwards. I’d barely sat down with my first (and only) drink when I caught sight of a man dressed as a monk; he was standing halfway up a staircase. Drawing my companion’s attention to him, I mused sarcastically: “Maybe he thinks it’s Halloween?"...a remark that was lost upon him because the stairway was by then quite vacant.
